5. Freshman and Sophomore Courses Ali: Hello, Professor Jones. I’d like to talk with you about my program of studies for this semester. Professor: Come in Ali. You’re enrolling as a freshman, aren’t you? Usually your freshman and sophomore years are devoted to general studies in six different areas. You will need to take between fifteen and twenty courses during these two years. Ali: What are the six areas, sir? Professor: English composition, foreign languages, mathematics and philosophy, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Ali: What do you advise me to take? Professor: First of all, you should take English composition. Since English is not your native language, it will also satisfy your foreign language requirement. Ali: What shall I take in the humanities? Professor: You have a choice of literature, fine arts, and music. Why don’t you take the introductory course in English literature? Ali: All right. In the social sciences, I’d like to take economics to be my major. I think it will be more useful to me than anthropology or political science. What courses do you recommend in the natural sciences? Professor: Well, instead of zoology, botany, physics or astronomy, I think psychology would be the most useful for you. Ali: Let me see. So far I have five courses: English composition, English literature, math, economics and psychology. What else should I take? Professor: That’s enough. Each course is three hours and fifteen hours is a full schedule. Ali: When do I pay my tuition? Professor: When you register. Ali: Thank you. Professor: Good luck.
