5. SPEAK, etc. SPEAK TO often indicates formality . TALK TO indicates an informal conversation . SAY is used with quotations . TELL is used with stories . Situation: Professor Reed SPOKE TO his class about winter this morning. It’s noon now. Henry and his American roommate James are TALKING about the lecture. James: What did Professor Reed talk about this morning? Henry: Winter. He SAID, “I SLEPT on the ice several times last year“ James: Are you sure he SAID, “I slept on the ice.”? Henry: Yes. I heard it very clearly. He TOLD us several stories. One time, he broke his arm. James: I don’t think you understood him correctly. Henry: Yes, I did. He slept on the ice and broke his arm.
