1. The Settlement of North America 1.1. COLONY, etc. Situation: Ali is talking with Mr. Smith about the people of the United States. Ali: When did the United States become a country? Mr. Smith: The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. At the time of the American Revolution, the country consisted of three groups of COLONIES: New England, Middle, and Southern. Ali: Were the people in the colonies all from the same country? Mr. Smith: No, people IMMIGRATED to the colonies from all parts of Europe. Most of the first SETTLERS in New England and in the South were English, but those in the Middle colonies were Dutch and Swedish. Ali: What kind of people were the immigrants? Mr. Smith: Many different types. For example, there were religious REFUGEES, such as Puritans; they settled in New England. There were also refugees who represented an English military class; they settled in the South. Ali: Did the immigrants come to the United States mainly for religious freedom? Mr. Smith: They came for many different reasons, and, in the beginning, religious freedom was certainly a major one. However, they have also come for adventure, as political refugees, to get rich, or searching for a chance to start a new life. Exercise: 1.1.1. Answer the Following Questions 1.
