Exercise: B.1.2. Practice Sentence Connectors Use ALSO, THEREFORE and HOWEVER to connect sentences. For example: Alice got a day off . She won’t be at work tomorrow. ALICE GOT A DAY OFF . THEREFORE, SHE WON’T BE AT WORK TOMORROW. Mary can read Spanish . She can't speak it . MARY CAN READ SPANISH . HOWEVER, SHE CAN'T SPEAK IT . Ivan likes economy . Ivan likes psychology . IVAN LIKES ECONOMY . ALSO, HE LIKES PSYCHOLOGY . 1. John was tired. He continued to study for his exam anyway. 2. Mary likes milk but she prefers tea this morning. 3. The water in the lake was very cold yesterday. It wasn’t a day for swimming. 4. Oscar studied until three o'clock last night. He must feel tired today. 5. For example: It seems impossible to learn a language in a short time . We must try . IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO LEARN A LANGUAGE IN A SHORT TIME . HOWEVER, WE MUST TRY . 1. Other people have done it. We know that is possible. 2. It has been done. It is still done frequently. 3. We may hope for perfection. We must be prepared to accept something less then perfection. 4. Learning a new language is difficult. The students must work hard. 5. Learning a new language means learning new habits. Constant practicing is necessary. 6. Translation takes too much time. It slows up the establishment of language habits. 7. The use of student's native language is discouraged. Some students continue doing it. 8. The language laboratory helps in listening. It gives an opportunity to practice speaking. 9. Constant practice is necessary. Every opportunity should be taken to use language. 10. Pronunciation of a new language is difficult at first. It becomes easier in time. 11. Talking with native speakers helps our understanding. Listening to lectures is helpful. 12. Reading portals written in English is a good practice. The best practice is talking to native speakers.
