2.6. POPULATION, etc. Situation: Ali is talking with Mrs. Smith. Ali: Would you please tell me something about the principal cities in the United States? John: Yes. According to POPULATION they are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Huston, Phoenix and Philadelphia. Ali: Is the population evenly SPREAD over the country or CONCENTRATED in one or two areas? John: It’s concentrated in the East and California. Ali: How large is the state of Washington D. C.? John: Washington, D. C. isn’t a state, it’s a city. D. C. stands for District of Columbia. With the population close to 700,000 souls, it is one of our largest cities. Ali: So the cities in US are much smaller than great cities of the world. For example, the estimated population of Tokyo is above 37,000,000 while in Jakarta about 26,000,000. John: It’s true. But if you include the metro and immediate surrounding area of the city, the population of New York exceeds 20,000,000. Exercise: 2.6.1. Practice POPULATION, etc. Answer the following questions. 1. What are some of the principal cities in the United States? 2. Is the population evenly spread around the country? 3. Is Washington D.C. a state or a city? 4. How large is Washington D.C.? 5. What’s the population of New York if you include metro area?
