1.4. PUBLISH, etc. NET Usually refers to the Internet . John: Let’s talk a bit more about publishing while we’re here. Sergey: All right. As I can see, a lot of stuff are PUBLISHED in the United States. Most of publications go online. However, many of them are still offered as paperbacks. How can Americans ever find time to read them all? John: They don’t Sergey. Most people read only two or three of them regularly. Take, for example, a NEWS MAGAZINE and a GENERAL INTEREST MAGAZINE. Sergey: By NEWS MAGAZINE you’re referring to The Time, The Nation or The Newsweek, aren’t you? John: Yes. I am. Sergey: By GENERAL INTEREST MAGAZINE, I suppose you mean The Reader’s Digest or The Saturday Evening Post. John: Certainly. I would also INCLUDE Harper’s and The New Yorker. John: The one devoted to a specific activity, say, a hobby, for example: fishing, sailing, gardening, cooking, etc. There is a valuable source of information for every interest you can think of. However, these days, people accommodate most of their needs for reliable information on the WEB. Exercise 1.4.1. Practice PUBLISH, etc. Answer the following questions: 1. Are many magazines published in the United States? 2. Do most of the publications go online or they are available as paperbacks? 3. How many publications do most people read regularly? 4. What kind of magazines can you think of? 5. How many general interest magazines can you think of? 6. What is a special interest magazine?
